Sri Lanka
An island kingdom full of variety
Southeast of India lies Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean – a true treasure chest for travelers. Within short distances you’ll find some of Asia’s most beautiful beaches, fascinating wildlife, and ancient temples. Our recommendation: start in Colombo and combine culture, nature, and beach holidays. Edelweiss flies directly to Colombo from October to May.
By train through tea plantations
The train ride from Kandy to Ella – or vice versa – is one of the highlights of a Sri Lanka round trip. The train leisurely rattles past lush tea plantations, waterfalls, and small villages, and on clear days the view stretches all the way to the Indian Ocean. If you don’t want to travel the entire route, you can take only sections of it and combine them ideally with a visit to Nuwara Eliya, the highest city in Sri Lanka, or with hikes through the tea plantations.
Lion Rock “Sigiriya”
Rising out of the dense jungle, the Sigiriya Rock awaits. Climbing the steps leads to the ruins of a 5th-century palace and offers panoramic views across the vast landscape. Our tip: visit early in the morning when the sun bathes the rock in red-golden light. The climb is sweaty, but the silence and vastness at the top reward you – an unforgettable experience.
Safari in Yala National Park
Sri Lanka surprises with its rich wildlife: elephants, leopards, crocodiles, and countless birds live here. On safari in Yala National Park, through its mix of savannah, forests, and lagoons, you’ll get very close to nature. The nearly 1,000 km² park hosts one of the world’s densest leopard populations. Chances of spotting these majestic animals in the wild are particularly good – don’t forget your camera!
Enchanting beaches
Sri Lanka’s most beautiful beaches are found in the south, such as in Mirissa, where whales can also be spotted. Unawatuna entices with calm bays, Tangalle with endless stretches of sand. Surfers flock to Hikkaduwa and Weligama – from November to March conditions are ideal. On the east coast, Nilaveli and Pasikudah both enchant with their unique charm.
Culinary variety
Sri Lankan cuisine is a feast for the senses: crispy Kottu (chopped flatbread with vegetables and meat), aromatic Egg Hoppers (thin batter cups with egg and curry), or creamy Milk Rice (rice cooked in coconut milk). A King Coconut always goes well with it! Our tips for special dining moments: Graze Kitchen and The Lagoon in Colombo, Kenoli in Sigiriya, or Maara Café in Galewela.
Hotels with character
Sri Lanka offers accommodations for every taste. A true highlight is Cape Weligama, with its spectacular views over the Indian Ocean. Those seeking tranquillity will feel at home at Amanwella, Amangalla or Anantara Peace Haven. In Yala National Park, the nature-embedded luxury lodges Wild Coast Tented Lodge and Chena Huts provide an unforgettable safari experience. For pure natural indulgence, we recommend the charming tea plantation hotels such as Ceylon Tea Trails or Heritance Tea Factory – unique retreats nestled in the highlands.
Dominican Republic
Pure Caribbean
On the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with Haiti, lies the Dominican Republic – the heart of the Caribbean and a land full of contrasts. White sandy beaches, colonial history and world-class golf courses with ocean views make it the ultimate holiday paradise. Along 900 miles of coastline, palm-fringed bays, turquoise waters and pure Caribbean joie de vivre await. Starting in October, Edelweiss will fly three times a week directly to Puerto Plata, with several weekly flights also available to Punta Cana.
Holiday paradise Punta Cana
At the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic, crystal-clear waters, endless beaches, and over 90 resorts await. Whether all-inclusive or boutique – in Punta Cana everyone finds their perfect spot by the sea. For active travelers, there are ideal conditions for kitesurfing, diving, or snorkeling – the Caribbean at its sporty best.
Puerto Plata – diversity in the north
Puerto Plata not only offers miles of sandy beaches but also cultural treasures. Explore the historic center with its Victorian villas or discover exotic plants in the botanical garden on Pico Isabel de Torres. For adventurers, there are catamaran tours, horseback riding, and zipline adventures. In the evening, the lively nightlife of Puerto Plata, Sosúa, or Cabarete beckons.
Fairways with sea views
The Dominican Republic is a golf mecca: with more than 25 courses – many right by the sea – the island is one of the leading golf destinations in the Caribbean. In addition, water sports such as kite- and windsurfing in Cabarete or surfing at Playa Encuentro are popular. Families can relax at Playa Dorada, while excursions to idyllic Saona Island promise pure Caribbean feeling.
Caribbean cuisine with a twist
The cuisine of the Dominican Republic blends Spanish, African, and Caribbean influences. Try Sancocho, a hearty stew, or fresh fish in coconut milk. Our tips: Castaways Bistro in Punta Cana, Don Pepe in Santo Domingo, and Rancho Chito in Moca – authentic cuisine that tastes like sun and sea.
Hotels with character
The selection is diverse: golf enthusiasts feel at home at both Eden Roc Cap Cana and Casa de Campo Resort, for which we offer an exclusive Special Offer – we’ll be happy to provide you with details. Pure luxury awaits at the Amanera Hotel in Playa Grande, while the Iberostar Waves in Punta Cana is ideal for families. In Santo Domingo, the Intercontinental Real is the top address. Our tip: be sure to plan time for excursions beyond the resorts – it’s well worth it.
ABC Islands
Three islands, one paradise
At the westernmost edge of the Lesser Antilles lie Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao – sun-drenched, colorful, and full of character. Each island has its own flair: Aruba with nightlife and Caribbean joie de vivre, Bonaire with peace and untouched beaches, Curaçao with colorful colonial architecture. From Amsterdam, KLM takes you conveniently to paradise.
Aruba: beaches & joie de vivre
Eagle Beach is among the world’s most beautiful beaches: white sand, palm trees, and turquoise waters. In Oranjestad, brightly painted colonial houses create pure Caribbean atmosphere, while beach clubs with music and cocktails provide vibrant flair. For variety, explore Arikok National Park by jeep, with cactus hills, hidden natural pools, and impressive caves.
Bonaire: underwater paradise
Bonaire is a dream destination for divers and snorkelers. Colorful coral reefs, tropical fish, and the famous wreck of the Antilla make every underwater heart beat faster. Our tip: take a boat trip to the offshore island of Klein Bonaire with its fine sandy beach and crystal-clear water – ideal for a day trip with snorkeling adventure.
Curaçao: culture & colors
Willemstad, the UNESCO-protected capital, enchants with pastel-colored houses, lively markets, and street art. An unforgettable experience is a catamaran trip at sunset – our tip for romantic evenings. Also worth seeing: the Curaçao Liqueur Distillery, where the bright blue liqueur has been produced for generations.
Nature & adventure
Each island offers unique highlights: in Aruba, jeep tours through Arikok National Park and swims in natural rock pools. Bonaire fascinates with flamingos in the Pekelmeer reserve and kayak tours through the mangroves. Curaçao offers adventures such as swimming with turtles in Grote Knip and thrilling quad tours across the hills.
Discover island cuisine
The culinary variety reflects the mix of cultures: In Aruba, try Keshi Yena – cheese stuffed with meat. Bonaire serves goat stew or fresh fish soup, while Curaçao surprises with Stoba stew and the typical Dutch Bitterballen. And of course, a glass of the famous blue Curaçao is a must.
Hotels with dream settings
From adults-only to luxury resorts – the ABC Islands offer the perfect match for every travel wish. Especially popular is the Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort on Aruba, directly at Eagle Beach. On Bonaire, the Harbour Village Beach Club scores with its private beach. In Curaçao, Blu Bay Resort and the exclusive Baoase Luxury Resort are idyllic retreats for unforgettable Caribbean holidays.
